Important Notice Regarding HAB July 2025
Here’s a recent note from Mike Green, VP of GVHA
“At about 7 AM this morning (7/10/25), Tim Smith and I spotted fresh harmful algal blooms (HABs) along the north shore of Long Pond. We filed reports with photos and reached out to a SUNY Brockport professor, who sent three grad students later that day. They collected water samples from across Long Pond for research comparing conditions here with Cranberry Pond and Braddock Bay. One student will focus her thesis on Long and Cranberry Ponds — including the creek that flows through the old dump into Long Pond. She had no idea about the dump and was surprised to hear it. The research team plans to keep us updated as their findings develop.”

Water Chestnut Treatment – South End of Long Pond
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is planning to use an aquatic herbicide between July 21st through August 1st. to control water chestnut (Tropo notoms) in the portion of Braddock By WMA within Long Pond, south of the Lake Ontario State Parkway. This project aims to improve the habitat quality for fish and wildlife and to reduce the spread of this invasive species into other parts of the WMA and the surrounding open water/wetland areas, thus improving habitat conditions as well as recreational and aesthetic values. The program will be conducted by the vegetation control firm Allen Chase Enterpries, Inc., NYS DEC Pesticide Business Registration #14110. A NYSDEC permit application has been submitted for approval for the application of the herbicide Clearcast (Imazamox).
This will be a foliar treatment applied with a combination of a boat and agricultural drone. It is anticipated that the application of up to 25 acres will take place between July 21st through August 1st. The roads and access sites along the shoreline will be posted at the time of the treatment indicating applicable water use restrictions.

From the annual General Meeting of the Grand View Heights Neighborhood Association held Thursday May 9th, our guest speaker this year was Chief Michael Wood. Chief Wood presented many statistics and responded to many questions asked by the attendees. Following is his acknowledgement of our “thank you” email to him:
I have already assigned some follow up tasks based on the feedback last night. We will have a supervisor and officer pay a visit on 5/18 at 9am at the Church before the cleanup event. Have also spoken with Parks about the lighting issue at Grandview Park. I have been told they are aware and working on it. Plan is to shut the light in question at park closing so it doesn’t illuminate the basketball court. Special attention to be provided to Lowden Point for the traffic concerns, motorcycles, etc. Let me know if you’d like me to write a letter regarding the other concerns (golf carts, etc.) that could be distributed to the neighbors. Would be happy to work with you on that. Have a nice weekend.
